Cancer is a serious problem for not only people, but their pups as well. It is reported that 50% of all dogs over the age of 10 will be diagnosed with a form of cancer. While all dogs can be a victim to cancer, there are a few breeds that are highly susceptible. Primarily, it is the large dogs such as Bermese Mountain dogs, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Boxers & Golden Retrievers that are predisposed to form cancer. There are three types of cancer that occur often.
The most prevalent is a form of skin cancer, which is comprised of Mast Cell Tumors. Often, these tumors can be removed and cured with surgery. However, because of the aggressive nature of these tumors, chemotherapy is sometimes needed in addition to surgery.
Another common form of canine cancer is Lymphoma. Lymphoma is not cure-able, but it is treatable with chemotherapy. It commonly affects the lymph nodes, but can spread to the central nervous system, liver, gastrointestinal tract, bone marrow or spleen.
Finally, there is a bone cancer which primarily affects large dogs: Osteosarcoma. This cancer comes in the form of a large tumor within the bone, often within the legs. This affliction is not curable, but can be treated with amputation. It is very important to catch this form of cancer early, as it can spread to the lungs if not treated.
The best way to prevent cancer is to be aware of the possibility, and have routine veterinarian check ups. In addition, you can perform examinations at home by feeling for tumors. Because of advances in veterinary medicine, cancer treatment for pets is on level with human cancer treatment. Cancer is a serious problem, but it is very possible for your pet to survive the affliction with the proper care and knowledge.
