Older pets need special care, just as older people do. Different phases in a pet’s life require different types of care. The below tips can be incredibly beneficial in treating your elderly pet, and increasing their life span.
Older pets are more susceptible to illness, and so it is important that you keep an eye on your pet for any signs of health issues. Ensuring your pet is eating regularly, drinking regularly, having normal bowel movements and maintaining a healthy weight, is even more important for aging pets. In order to keep your pet safe, make sure that he or she is up to date on vaccinations, and has routine veterinarian check ups.
You should continue to groom your pet regularly. During this time, check for any new or strange lumps, sores, or tender areas that seem to cause pain. Also check your pets ears and nose for strange discharge. If any of the above are present, you should take your pet to the vet.
Furthermore, once a pet is reaching old age, you should change their food to meet their new nutritional needs. Switching to a “senior” pet food will help to ensure that they will get the proper diet - select something low in calories but high in fiber. It is also not a bad idea to provide your pet with animal safe vitamins or supplements. However, you should consult your vet before doing so.
For pets with arthritis, make sure that they have comfortable beds in an easy to access area. Elevated feeders can also help, so that your pet does not have to bend down & aggravate their joints to eat or drink.
It may be difficult for some owners to accept these changes, both emotionally or financially, but by doing so you can prolong a quality life for your pet.
