Most cat owners know that their kitties love catnip, but what else do we really know about it?
Catnip, or nepeta cataria, contains a chemical called nepetalactone, which causes cats to act playful & euphoric or lazy & sleepy. It also causes some felines to drool excessively (this is a normal side affect). Approximately 50% of cats are affected by this chemical.
Catnip also has effects on humans, and so it has been used in teas and tinctures as a home-remedy for headaches and insomnia.
Catnip is a plant in the mint family, and can easily be grown. It is a perennial flowering plant, and requires a lot of room to grow. The catnip plant has heart shape leaves and small lavender flowers.
Catnip can be used to train cats, by sprinkling it on a scratching post. It can also be used to increase a cat’s interest in a toy. Dried catnip should be rubbed in your hand before use in order to activate the oils. Catnip should be stored in a cat-proof area, and should be used with care. Within two hours of using cat nip, a cat will be more sensitive to a second dose.
