Many common dog toys can be dangerous to your pup if proper precautions are not taken.
Dogs love bones, but not all bone’s will be safe for your dog. Poultry and rib bones are prone to splintering, and can cause severe intestinal problems for your pet. The safest option for feeding your pet a bone is to avoid giving them kitchen scraps, and instead purchasing bones from a pet store - which are specifically designated for your dog to enjoy. Always watch your pet while they have a bone in order to best ensure that no problems occur. If you suspect your pet has swallowed a bone, you should take them to your vet immediately.
Rawhide chews can also be dangerous. Pieces of rawhide can break off, or become slick with slobber, and cause choking or intestinal hazards to your pooch. Furthermore, Rawhides made outside of America can contain harmful chemicals. If you would like to allow your pet to continue to enjoy rawhide chews, make sure that you buy local products that are of an appropriate size for your breed. Watch your pet carefully while they are enjoying it, and when the piece gets small enough for your dog to swallow you should throw it away.
Tennis balls are beloved by many active dogs, and are the safest ball for your pet to play fetch with. However, smaller balls with smoother surfaces can easily be accidentally swallowed, causing your pet to choke. Ensure that the ball is big enough so that your dog cannot accidentally swallow it. You should also avoid racquetballs and golf-balls, as these are some of the most dangerous.
Stuffed toys can be dangerous, especially for dogs that love to tear them to bits. Small parts - such as eye or nose pieces, as well as the stuffing inside can be dangerous to your pets digestive system and health.
In order to keep a safe collection of toys for your playful pup, purchase only products that are labeled as pet-safe or child-safe. Watch for small parts which can become choking hazards, and remove or replace toys once they have been torn open (if they are exposing stuffing). Avoid toys with sharp parts & corners, as well as feathers, ribbons, strings, eyes, or other small pieces that could be harmful or easily removed.
By being aware of the above information and guidelines, you can make sure that playtime & treats are safe for your pet.
