Dog Park Etiquette

The dog park is a great place to get out with your pup and have a good time. They are incredibly beneficial as they can provide a wide area for your dog to learn and play. However, it is important to be aware of dog park etiquette. This article will provide you with some basic Do’s & Don’ts to remember next time you and your canine companion go out to the park.

DO:
-Follow the Posted Rules. The rules are in place in order to keep the park a positive and enriching environment for you and your pooch. Always be sure to clean up your dog’s waste, and be mindful of leash requirements.
-Ensure your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations. It is respectful and important to ensure that your dog is up to date on all shots before you take him or her out to a public place - for the safety of your dog as well as the others.
-Supervise your dog. No matter how well behaved your pup is at home, it is important to keep an eye on him or her while you are at the park. Altercations can happen, and it is in the best interest of you and your dog to keep a watchful eye.

DON’T:
-Do not bring a dog under four months of age to the park. This is to ensure the safety of your puppy, as well as to ensure that he or she is up to date on vaccinations.
-Do not leave halters, choke chains, or link collars on your dog while they are roaming the park. These collars can be dangerous during play, as claws or teeth may get snagged on them.
-Do not discipline other dogs. Keep your opinions about dog care to yourself, so as to avoid arguments or rifts between other dog owners. This is to ensure a positive environment among park-goers, as well as to keep your focus on your own pooch.

Following the above tips will help you to have a fun play-date with your dog at the park. Parks should be a fun, clean, and friendly environment for you and your pooch, and it is the responsibility of the park-goers to keep it that way.
