Marvely Correa has sweet dreams. About her newest organic ice cream business.
But her clients aren’t the usual folks who crave Confections. They’re dogs.
Most dogs love ice cream, “said Correa, a Pines resident of 11 years.”
“But dogs can’t tolerate sugar” Unable to locate any pet-friendly, organic cold creations at the local supermarket and specialty shops, Correa founded her Pines-based service, Doglato, last August.
Catering specifically to sweet-toothed canines, Correa’s organic ice cream ditches most of the sugar and fat usually found in frozen treats in favor of Fido-friendly ingredients. These include carob, a chocolate substitute and vanilla yogurt, which promotes digestion.
The Mother of one, who operates Doglato from her Pines home, has tried marketing her confections to specialty pet boutiques, dog bakeries and niche stores. Some gave her the cold shoulder, but now her dairy delights can be found in Broward County.

When and why did you move to Pembroke Pines?
I moved to Pembroke Pines after moving to Miramar in 1999. I wanted to get out of Hialeah to put my daughter, Tatiana, into a good school.
In your experience how much exactly do dogs love ice cream?
Dogs love it; they see their owner licking an ice cream cone and they want it. But you can’t give your dog human ice cream because their bodies can’t break down sugars well and they develop diabetes.
Some people don’t ever realize that chocolate is toxic to dogs. So I came up with a dog ice cream they can eat.
What are some of the specialty flavors you offer?
I sell four flavors which are all organic. I have sweet potato banana,
Vanilla peanut butter, chocolate banana (Carob) I also have pumpkin banana
peanut butter, which I am selling until March.
How does your ice cream for dogs differ from ice cream for humans?
Humans can eat my ice cream, but it won’t be very sweet. After I mix the ingredients together, it’s a little bland. The content of sugar and milk is different.
How many dogs do you own and what are their names?
I have two tiny, adorable CHIHUAHUAS. One is Mia, who is 11 and weighs 4.2 pounds , and the other is a Chihuahua mix named Kuiny, who is 18. They both love to eat my ice cream, and in fact they were my guinea pigs, so to speak, when I tested the ice cream.
In which locations do you sell your ice cream for dogs?
I usually seel it on my website, but I’m in at Fiesta pet deli in Pompano, It really suits a lot of healthy pet food stores.
What is your process for whipping up a batch of Doglato ice cream?
I always buy fresh organic bananas and organic vanilla yogurt, which is usually my base. All the ingredients are organic. I rented out a commercial kitchen in Pines to make all my batches, and I serve them in four-, eight- or 16 ounce cups and mini-cones.
What’s in the future for your doggie ice cream business?
I can already see the ice cream parlor in my head. The dogs will sit in high chairs and slurp on the ice cream, which will be served in these cups with one side hallowed out like a crescent. The walls will have doggy-themed pictures.
