It can be terrifying to even think of, but if your pet were to run off and get lost: How would you find him again?
The most important step is prevention. You do not want your pet to get lost, so consider the following: Do not let your pet out of your sight when you are away from home. If you are in a new or open area, do not let your pet off the leash. No matter how well trained your animal may be, they are still naturally curious and may run off in order to investigate the area.
Keep your home secure. Make sure that your doors are closed completely, and if you have a gate - make sure it is secure. Pets can find a way to slip through small openings if they have the drive to explore.
Keep your pets information up to date. This is crucial for in case your pet gets lost. Having your pet’s information and tags up to date and in use is the best way to ensure that your pet will find a way home, should he get lost.
In case your pet runs off and you cannot find him, the first thing you need to do is stay calm. It is difficult not to panic, but it is important that you keep a level head in order to get your pet home safe.
In most cases, pets will not stray too far from home. Check around your neighborhood, and alert your neighbors that your pet has gotten lost. Post posters in areas where your pet may be wandering that include the pet’s information, your information, and a photo if possible. Go to all nearby shelters, pet shops, and veterinarian offices nearby and ask if they have seen your pet. Provide them with your pets information, photo, and your information so that they can alert you if they hear or see anything. Place an ad in the local paper (or local internet classifieds) if you can, to further spread the word that your pet is missing.
The most important thing you can do to keep your pet from getting lost is to ensure that their ID tags are worn and up to date. Furthermore, you can have a microchip implanted under your pet’s skin - this will contain all of the pet information, and many vet offices and shelters will scan a pet for one of these if found.
Following all of the above steps, and searching often for your pet should help you to find him. In most cases, the animal is close to home and is found within 48 hours (however, pets have gone missing for weeks or months before being found). Do not give up hope!
