For years, many pet owners have been using effective flea & tick treatments with chemical compounds. However, we are now learning that these pesticidal chemical compounds can be unsafe for you and your pet. With this new information, as well as the drive to “go green”, many natural products have been released that are just as effective, and completely safe.
Many natural flea and tick treatments utilize strong oils from a variety of plants such as cinnamon, clove, peppermint, and eucalyptus. However, it is important to note that these treatments may not be completely safe for felines, as they are more sensitive to these oils - and can ingest them while grooming. A safe option for felines is dried neem leaves, from the neem tree. Infusing these dried leaves into a tea-like solution, and applying them to your cat is the safest way to treat parasites on cats.
The most popular natural additives in botanical flea and tick treatment are extracts from chrysanthemum flowers & citrus peels. The ingredient Pyrethrine, from chrysanthemum flowers, acts as a neurotoxin in parasites but is completely safe for mammals. Pyrethrines are also the safest natural pesticide for use in food crops according to the FDA. The drawback to Pyrethrine is that it does not treat larval or egg parasites: only the adults.
An extract from citrus peels, D-Limonene, will kill parasites in all stages (egg, larval and adult) by eating away at the waxy coating to the pests’ respiratory system, effectively suffocating the parasite. Because it can kill pet pests’ in all stages of life, it is considered one of the most effective treatments.
Because these botanical solutions are not toxic, they can be used repeatedly if needed. However, caution should be taken to not over-use the product, especially not on young, old, nursing, medicated, or weak animals. Consult your veterinarian before using any of these products.
