Toxic foods for dogs

We are all guilty of offering scraps from the table to our dogs, but there are some foods which should never be offered to your canine. There are many foods that are safe for humans, but unsafe for dogs and other domestic mammals.

Chocolate is the most commonly known toxic food. Chocolate, along with coffee and tea, contain caffeine and can affect the heart and nervous system. Citrus fruits are often too acidic for most animals, and can cause vomiting. Bones from fish, poultry or other meat sources can cause cuts or obstructions in your pet’s digestive system. Grapes, raisins, and wines, contain a chemical which is incredibly toxic, and can cause kidney complications. Onions and garlic (garlic being slightly less toxic), damage red blood cells and can cause anemia. Macadamia nuts contain an unknown toxin which can affect the digestive, nervous, and muscle systems.

Recently, it has been discovered that xylitol - an artificial sweetener can cause liver disease and hypoglycemia in dogs. It is incredibly dangerous and can be found in toothpaste, gums, and some pastries.

Because of the amount and severity of toxic foods, as well as the fact that new discoveries in toxic foods are being made over time, it is important to exercise caution in what you feed your pet. Research food items before feeding them to ensure they are not dangerous. You can also keep a list of proven-toxic and proven-safe foods in your kitchen, or somewhere safe where it can be referenced.
